Progression has been shaken up in EVE, though it retains much of Online's DNA. Skills continue to be learned over time, with increasing tiers ballooning up in hours to days, but some of the fat has been trimmed from the process. There are no attributes which impact the total amount of time that it takes to learn a skill, and ability extractors/injectors are nowhere available. Even skillbooks are absent, because the whole system is now governed by Tech Levels. Since you learn skills you will increase your Tech Level, which gates weapons, ships, and other items. All skills are available to youpersonally, though anything outside the starter skills have to be unlocked with an ISK purchase (the higher the skill the more costly it is to unlock). Skill points are even stricter if you have nothing and are offline, meaning gamers not able to log in daily are in a position to batch"buy" abilities as required. Of course abilities nevertheless dictate your general power, and the absolute amount of them on offer means gamers will want to specialize sooner rather than later (for reference, it is going to take two years to max-out every skill in eve Online). The Tech Level gating functions nicely here, setting a clear and clean development route, with every event in-game -- from battle encounters, to exploration, etc. -- with a clearly listed Tech Level associated with it. Even the brief quests -- Encounters -- have obvious Tech Levels attached to better inform players of what quests they need to and shouldn't be managing.
